HOW TREES AFFECT THE QUALITY OF OUR COFFEE

Trees enrich soil and provide vital shade for the coffee farms — and that’s just for starters.

A steady temperature is one of the most important environmental factors to affect the quality of coffee, so trees are the perfect addition to a coffee farm. Like parasols presiding over the fields, tree leaves provide natural shade to keep coffee plants cool – and protect against heavy rain – while their roots help prevent soil erosion.

But that’s not all trees do.

They can generate an extra income for coffee farmers by providing them with wood, fruit, spices and herbs. They also enrich soil with organic matter, absorb carbon dioxide and restore biodiversity as they create a habitat for wildlife.

So you’ll understand why we’ve been really busy planting lots of trees. This is just some of what we’ve been up to.

The Power of Trees

Why Nespresso chooses to cultivate trees to craft coffee, and how agroforestry will ultimately increase farm climate resilience.

Plant protectors

Since 2009, Nespresso has been reducing its carbon footprint per cup of coffee by 20% across its business.

Our goal is to plant 10 million trees by 2020 in the coffee producing regions where we work.

Trees absorb carbon dioxide.

They remove and store the carbon while releasing the oxygen back into the air, so they help combat climate change.

Are trees really that powerful?

Yes they:

  • Enrich soil with organic matter such as leaves
  • Protect coffee plants against severe weather such as tropical sun and heavy rain
  • Protect against erosion as they hold soil in place and slow runoff on hillsides or slopes
  • Generate an extra income for coffee farmers by providing them with wood, fruit, spices and herbs
  • With our partner PUR Projet, we’ve already planted 1.4 million trees in Ethiopia, Guatemala, Colombia and Indonesia
